While managing photos, I find the following software essential – these all work well alongside Photo2Graph.
IrfanView
IrfanView (https://www.irfanview.com/) is a freeware Graphic Viewer for Windows that is pretty good for viewing the various sections metadata in a photo, including the XMP section. It can update the legacy IPTC section – but cannot edit the Exif or IPTC Extension fields in XMP.
I find it useful for simple cropping and resizing of photos for printing the correct size.
To view the metadata, open a photo and click on the Image/Information menu. If there is an Exif, IPTC or JPEG Comments section, there will be buttons to view these sections. To view the IPTC Extension fields, click the IPTC Info button and then select XMP from the tab. The XMP Display table can be a bit confusing, but it provides a comprehensive display of all XMP information.
ExifTool
ExifTool (https://exiftool.org/)is a platform independent command-line application for reading, writing and editing metadata information in a wide variety of files. It is the best way to check that the metadata within a photo is correctly constructed. it is a very powerful tool but quite complex to master. Some Photo Editor Software packages use ExifTool to make changes to metadata, as it can be is a complex process. I did look at using ExifTool within Photo2Graph but decided it would be more efficient to use Java libraries. However, it has been an invaluable tool to check whether Photo2Graph is working correctly.
Adobe Bridge
Adobe Bridge (https://www.adobe.com/uk/products/bridge.html) provides a comprehensive Digital Asset Manager capability including photo metadata updating and unlike many Adobe products, is completely free (although you do have to register with Adobe). It does support editing all metadata including IPTC Extension fields. However, out of the box it does not allow searching of IPTC Extension fields – you would have to pay for a ‘plug in’ to enable this – whereas Photo2Graph will search all IPTC fields.
